Recycling – the Springhill way

The lifestyle support team at Accrington’s Springhill Care Home is a step closer to completing its own Old Curiosity Shop.

For some time the team has been on the lookout for an ornamental bird cage to add to the design of the ‘shop’ – intended to be a welcoming environment for residents to enjoy curios from the past and take part in themed activities such as sewing, reflecting the history of the county.

A member of the team has discovered a suitable bird cage which has now been donated to the home by its former owners, and is set to be transformed.

Theresa Swan, General Manager of Springhill Care Home, said: “out of the blue after Easter, a member of the team visiting the Forest of Bowland spotted a birdcage which was no longer of use to its former owners and was ready to be disposed of.

“The birdcage has now been donated to the home and our handyman, Mick, is looking forward to the restoration project.

"Staff and residents agree it is great to be able to re-use this beautifully crafted item which will be enjoyed for many years once it becomes a central part of the Old Curiosity Shop.”
