Staff training is key at Springhill Care Home, so when our maintenance team asked to undertake a detailed moving and handling course to expand their current knowledge, we invited them to attend an in-depth training course.
By attending the course – which includes mobilising, lifting and hoisting our residents – the maintenance team now has the confidence and knowledge to safely assist care staff in an emergency or as and when required.
Stephen Critchley and Lee Wolstenholme volunteered for the training and took part in the full-day course recently delivered by Ann Rolfe of AR associates.
Through their maintenance role, both staff members attend annual moving and handling training relating to objects, but this was the first time they have undergone training specific to working with people and was something the pair had requested.
As well as keeping our environment safe, warm and comfortable, the maintenance team now has an understanding of the principles of moving and handling our more vulnerable residents, and also a better knowledge of the demands on care staff in this area.
Stephen said: "We spend most of our working day out and about the care home and specialist dementia service, and we’ve always been keen to learn how to properly assist care staff when they need us most.
“Now we can both respond to any situation requiring this level of training and we’re both looking forward to helping if required.”
We’re always looking at ways to help our staff fulfil their potential and offer training wherever it might assist.
